Know Your Agent: when AI becomes an economic actor

Tomorrow, it will no longer be you who chooses between two data providers or pays for access to a specialised AI model: it will be your agent. The bottleneck is no longer intelligence, but trust and accountability. Hence the rise of “Know Your Agent”.

01From chatbot to commerce: the bottleneck is now trust

After the 2024 hype, the conversation on AI agents has moved from interaction to commerce: paying, contracting, coordinating and settling value autonomously. The technology exists, but the economic infrastructure remains reluctant: APIs block agents, merchants restrict them, payment systems assume a human approves every purchase.

Moving from Know Your Customer to Know Your Agent is not a figure of speech. Agents will need cryptographically verifiable credentials linking them to an identified principal, to explicit constraints and to an auditable performance history. Without these guarantees, it is rational for a merchant to block an agent at the firewall.

02Two building blocks: ERC-8004 for trust, x402 for payment

ERC-8004 deployed on Ethereum, then on several major layer-2 networks.

Separately, an identity standard and a payment protocol are useful. Together, they sketch a market architecture: services discoverable by default, reputation portable from one platform to another, settlement tied to task execution, and proof of payment that feeds the agent's trust record.

03An open market, or new walled gardens

Picture a delegated research task: within a set budget, the agent identifies specialised agents through an open registry, selects them on attested reputation signals, pays per use for premium datasets and returns a traceable report. No subscription, no manual invoice, no intermediate human coordination.

Projections suggest agents could influence or carry out purchases worth tens of billions of dollars by 2030. If discovery, identity and reputation concentrate in the hands of a few closed platforms, censorship and rent extraction will become the norm for a significant share of the economy.

Know Your Agent is not a conceptual add-on; it is the precondition for a market in which software entities can become full economic participants.OpenbanQ, February 2026
